In Sanskrit, the word for the universe is Brahmanda (ब्रह्माण्ड).

Brahma means the cosmos or creation, and Anda translates literally to egg.

The Rig Veda calls it Hiranyagarbha (हिरण्यगर्भ), the golden womb, the golden egg, the first condensation of the formless into form.

The Vedic and Puranic traditions describe the entire universe as having originated from Hiranyagarbha, a primordial egg from which all creation poured forth.

It is described as the primordial, glowing ellipsoid that floated in the dark, formless void of the unmanifest, before the universe was born.

And then, the cosmic egg cracked. Creation spilled out.

Today, modern cosmologists have pointed their most advanced telescopes at the cores of distant galaxies, gathered the data, and stitched it together through supercomputers.

And what did the supercomputers render?

An ellipsoid.

That is the geometrical name for the shape of an egg.

In essence, scientists have concluded that the primordial form of every galaxy is ellipsoidal.

It seems our sages of the past had aptly named the universe Brahmanda (ब्रह्माण्ड).

A pigeon does not study the cosmos through telescopes.

A pigeon does not read the Rig Veda.

But still, when a pigeon lays an egg, it is always in the shape of an ellipsoid. Why?

Because that is the geometry existence defaults to when it begins to create.

The first form of creation is an ellipsoid.

Look at the evidence across every scale. 

From the smallest fish egg to the largest bird egg, across every reptile that has ever laid a clutch, nature has never once chosen a corner, an edge, or a flat surface to hold new life. 

Without a single exception, the vessel of life belongs to the ellipsoid family.

At the planetary scale, the Earth itself is not a perfect sphere. It is an oblate ellipsoid, slightly flattened at the poles and bulging at the equator. 

At the orbital scale, every planet traces an elliptical path around its star.

At the cosmic scale, the observable universe itself reveals an ellipsoidal geometry in the map of its microwave background radiation.

The form repeats at every scale because the underlying principle is one. 

The same pattern expresses itself at the level of the atom, the egg, the planet, and the cosmos.

And the pattern is this: When the formless first condenses into form, it becomes an ellipsoid. 

Not a cube. Not a pyramid. Not a random shape. An ellipsoid. Every time. At every scale. Without exception.

From the cosmic to the biological, from the birth of a galaxy to the birth of a fish, the first act of the unmanifest becoming manifest is always the same gesture. The infinite curving into an egg.

What else is a perfect ellipsoid?

The Shiva Linga.

If you visit any ancient Shiva temple, you will not find a statue of a god as the main deity. You will find a linga. An ellipsoid form.

Because the linga is not a symbol invented by priests. It is the most accurate geometric description of that first gesture, the ellipsoid that stands at the threshold between the formless and form.

The ellipsoid is the signature of the formless becoming form.

Shiva is indeed the greatest engineer. Not because Shiva designed the ellipsoid the way a human engineer designs a bridge, with calculations and blueprints. But because the ellipsoid is Shiva's own nature expressing itself.

The engineer and the engineering are not separate.

Shiva does not stand outside the ellipsoid. Shiva does not hold a blueprint. Shiva is the formless that becomes the ellipsoid.

This is why the traditions say Shiva is not some God sitting up there in the clouds.

Shi-va: literally means"that which is not." 

Shiva is that which is not. The formless reality. The substratum of existence.

And the formless does not create the way a potter creates a pot, from the outside, with hands and tools.

The formless creates the way the ocean creates a wave. From the inside. By being itself.

The wave is not made by the ocean. The wave is the ocean in motion. 

The linga is not made by Shiva. The linga is Shiva in form.

The problem arises because we are deeply conditioned to anthropomorphise god. We think god is a human being with more power. Maybe a hundred hands, maybe three heads, maybe a few superpowers thrown in.

But the Vedic culture was deeply scientific in its conception of the divine. The divine is not a person who supervises your life, rewards you for good deeds, and punishes you when you act naughty.

The divine is the source of your life. The source of all life. The ground from which everything springs.

The soil from which the tree of life grows and is nourished.

The fundamental fabric from which galaxies are spun, stars are lit, solar systems take shape, and the very earth on which you live is woven.

Everything comes from the same fabric. Everything is made of the same source.

And you, the eyes reading these words, and the one behind the eyes, you also came from the same source.

You are made of the same stuff the cosmos is made of. Not poetically. Not metaphorically. Literally.

Every atom of carbon in your DNA, every atom of oxygen you breathe, was forged in the fiery core of a star over millions of years. This process is called stellar nucleosynthesis. The calcium in your bones, the iron in your blood, the carbon in your cells, all of it was born in ancient stellar furnaces.

As Carl Sagan said, we are made of star stuff.

The peace and fulfilment we so desperately search for arrives when we move closer to the source of who we are.

And this movement towards the source of life within is called meditation.

And the place that creates the most conducive environment for this journey is called a temple.

That is why ancient temples have an ellipsoid linga as the main deity. Because this is the first form that the source takes when it begins to manifest. This form is the doorway through which you can enter the source.

So the next time you visit an ancient Shiva temple, do not pray for this or that.

Just sit quietly in the linga's energy field, and let it draw you to the very core of your existence.
