Six Years of Becoming Meditative

Today is a special day.

5th May 2026. Six years have passed since the 'Becoming Meditative' course was launched on this exact day six years back.

I started a course. Again, this is not accurate to put it. The course just came out of me. It was just there and it just came out. Maybe I was pregnant with that course. Something like that. Or that is a poetic way of saying it.

But more technical and mechanical way of saying it is, it was just a culmination of my journey till that point and also a way of crystallizing my own learning.

I started my spiritual journey in 2017. Whatever I figured, whatever I understood at least intellectually, and maybe got a small, tiny glimpse of what this is, in the direction that I want to go in, I kind of crystallized it into a course.

If you want to learn meditation, before learning a method or a technique, first you have to approach your interiority in the right way. Without that, there is no meditation. So the 'Becoming Meditative' course addressed this first before handing you a method to meditate.

Taking 100% Responsibility

The first foremost thing is taking 100% responsibility of your own damn life. That you take full and complete responsibility of who you are internally. Externally, if you have no hairs, if you have big hairs, if you are male or female, if you have big height or small height, it is not in your hands.

Maybe science one day will reach a point where it will allow us to take that also in hands, that we can change our skin complexion, that we can change our height. Today we can at least implant the hairs. So science has progressed that much. So that also can be in our hands.

But what matters for inner journey, what matters for a meditative journey, is that you take 100% accountability for your inner world.

What is the experience of your life? Is your life meaningful or meaningless? Is your life beautiful or ugly? Is your life joyful or miserable? Is your life frustrating or adventurous? Is your life shallow or deep? All these things are totally 100% dependent on you.

➖➖➖

Becoming a Seeker

The second foundation is becoming a seeker. You don't believe in anything. You do not disbelieve in anything. See everything the way it is, and you are willing to admit to yourself that what I know I know, and what I do not know I do not know. That much humility and that much straightforwardness that you must have before you begin your spiritual journey, otherwise it becomes a very slippery slope.

This actually was a foundational aspect of my journey because it saved me from a lot of hallucinations and a lot of the fairy tale part of the popular version of what people think is spirituality. Seeing signs, seeing angels, and all of those nonsense.

That might have its own relative truth, but without readying your mind and intellect like this, without understanding where you are standing currently, without establishing that first, if you get entangled or engaged in all of the fairy tales, then you just get lost. Many have wasted their lives because they didn't establish this fundamental mindset of being a seeker

➖➖➖

Understanding Desire

The third aspect is understanding the desire. What is desire? What is it trying to point at?

For me, the entry point of spirituality was this insight that desire ultimately is a vehicle that you are using to get to the experience of the infinite within you. This insight, confirmed with my own experience, changed the entire trajectory of my life.

Before that, I thought that creating a million dollar startup is what I want, and I was pursuing that. But because I failed at it so miserably and so stupidly and foolishly, that messed up my entire interiority. I had a lot of stress, anxiety, overthinking, to a point that I lost my voice because of psychosomatic reasons.

And then I started healing myself through yoga, meditation, and started finding answers with spirituality.

One thing that clicked instantly was when I came across this insight that the content of desire doesn't matter. Because if you take any desire and if you stretch it, if you extrapolate it, you will see that nothing will satisfy you. Even if I was able to build a successful startup which earns 1 million dollars a year, I will not be satisfied at that. I would be aiming for 10 million and 100 million. And this was not a theory. I could see that, I could feel that in my bones.

If you pick up your own desires and do this thought experiment and extend this, that okay, right now, I am wishing that I get a home, and just think about it, that if you get it, will you be settled? No.

So this particular insight was so foundational that now the journey kind of began.

Now I knew that this intense longing that I have is not for a million dollar startup or for anything else. It is for the infinite. There is no doubt that I want something limitless, vast, and infinite.

➖➖➖

The Two Questions

But the next questions which naturally came to me were:

First, if the longing is for infinite, how do I get it?

Second, why is this longing in the first place?

The last nine years are just the deepening of those questions, getting answers to those questions and living those answers. That is the entire nine-year journey in one line.

It is interesting that six years back, in the Becoming Meditative course, in a seed form, I had already answered those questions. Because I could grasp it intellectually, but it was not yet deep enough to become my very blood.

➖➖➖

How Do I Get the Infinite?

The first question. How do I get something limitless, vast, and infinite?

The answer was very clear. I cannot get it by acquiring anything or becoming anything. Because if I want to acquire anything, I have to take it from the world. And if I take that from the world, there is always space for adding more of those things. So it cannot be infinite. It cannot be so vast that nothing more can be added to it.

Then Sadhguru said that you have to turn inward and find the infinite within. Which kind of baffled me. It was very puzzling. How do you find infinite within? Because I am like a tiny body and mind, and in this, how do I find the infinite?

If I close my eyes, I can see a swarm of thoughts. I cannot find anything else. I cannot find any limitless, any vastness, any infinite. Nothing. It is just a jumble of thoughts, racing thoughts.

But one thing was for sure. The infinite will not be found through the world. It is not possible. How can you get the infinite through the world? It is just not possible.

The second way, which Sadhguru was suggesting, and which all spiritual masters, yogis, and scriptures have suggested, is to find the infinite within. That was puzzling because it was just not making sense that there can be a possibility that there is somewhere infinite within. My direct experience was not supporting that claim. They say that try to find the infinite within, and if I close my eyes I don't see any infinite within.

But this was 100% sure. The answer is within only. Because outside, it is impossible. But inside, let me explore.

➖➖➖

Why Am I Longing for Infinite?

The second question. Why is this longing in the first place? Why am I longing for the infinite?

The answer to that question is that it is because of my mistaken identity.

You are essentially infinite, but because you have assumed yourself to be a tiny little entity, you are longing to come back to your natural state of vastness.

And this longing is getting expressed as desires.

Up till that point, I thought that my identity is my name, my past achievements, how I looked, and my personality, and all the stories that I had in my head. That I was my name, that I was my surname, that I belonged to a certain family. That was who I am.

But when you ask just two questions, all these ideas of who I am, they just fall apart. So this entire assumption of who I was, was deeply mistaken. It was not true that my essential, fundamental identity is the stories that I have about myself in my head, or my name, or my surname, or all the other nonsense. Because I could be some other name. I could have looked some other way. I could have some other success or failure stories.

My entire idea of who I am is so freaking wrong. It's so wrong.

When I started reflecting on this, when I started going deep into these questions, I could not take one step forward in life. Because without knowing who I am, how can I take up anything else? Because whatever else I do would be based on this foundation of who I think I am. I think I am this person and out of that I will act. That would become the foundation, and on that foundation all the other bricks of life would be laid.

So I did not pursue anything else. I thought these are the foundational years of my life, and I will not move ahead, I will not do anything else, until I go deep into these matters. Because without doing that, nothing else was making sense to me.

All these last nine years have just been deepening the answers to these two questions.

Isha Kriya: Knowing Yourself Beyond the Accumulations

Then I found that there is a way to know yourself, to get to your real self.

Right now, whatever I think is myself is a hotchpotch.

My journey started with Isha Kriya meditation of Sadhguru, which is also taught in the Becoming Meditative course. It basically helps you experientially move towards who you are, beyond and below all the superficial stories that you have about yourself. It is a 12 minute meditation which helps you know yourself apart from the accumulations of the body and mind.

Whatever story you have about yourself is based on this assumption that this particular body, the way I look, the height, the hairs, the gender, that is me. And whatever is happening inside my skull, in my brains, the mind, that is me. So the body and mind is me, and based on this fundamental assumption, all the other stories are built.

But if you examine this closely, you will see that neither the body is you nor the mind is you. Because the body is something that we have accumulated. It is not something that is inherent in you. When we were born, we were very small, and now we are this big. This has happened because of the food that we eat.

Today, as you read this and as I write this, the body that we have is nothing but a sum total of what we have eaten. It is nothing but accumulation of the earth. Food is nothing but soil transformed. So your body is nothing but a mass of earth structured in a particular way thanks to Mother Nature and evolution.

The body is something that is an accumulation. We keep accumulating it.

And the mind is a different kind of accumulation. All the achievements that I had in my life. Got second prize at the state-level elocution competition. Got first rank in class 10th standard scoring the highest percentage in the history of that particular school by just studying one month before the exam. The memories of vacations at my maternal uncle's home. All these things are content of my mind. And the content of my mind is not who I am. Because that was added to me at certain point in my life.

I existed before I won that speech competition. I existed before I got the first rank in that school. I existed before whatever happened and became a part of the content of my mind. So the content of mind is also an accumulation. This is something that I'm accumulating.

So then where the hell am I? I never thought about it till that point. And that kind of changed the trajectory of my life from that point onwards.

The Selfish Intention Behind Yog Prachar

I just wanted to go into the depth of these two questions. All the courses, retreats at Yog Prachar today are an attempt to help myself deepen the answers to these questions primarily, and secondarily by doing that, it can also help other people, because all these things apply to every human being.

But my primary intention is very selfish. Because I wanted to deepen my own journey. To teach is to learn twice.

When I condensed all of this essence in the Becoming Meditative course and taught it in the last six years to more than 1,28,000 people across the globe, it allowed me to look at these questions more deeply, more minutely, more closely. And that, as a consequence or a side effect, also helped thousands of people to find a sense of clarity, peace, and joy when they also started going deep into these matters.

The course saves you from the biggest trap of spirituality

That was the Isha Kriya. What the Becoming Meditative course did was that it did not just teach a technique which is available easily on YouTube. It actually went deep into the science behind the process. Why you should do what you are doing.

Because without knowing the why, you will not be able to sustain that practice for long. It will not make any sense after a few weeks once the initial enthusiasm is washed off. So it goes in-depth into the science behind each and every process in the Kriya. Why do we focus on breath? Why do we do the Aaa chant? Why do we focus in between our eyebrows during Isha Kriya meditation?

What this course does at the end is even more important. Because in the spiritual, meditative journey, nobody from outside can tell you whether you are progressing or regressing. And if you do not have a clear understanding of your end goal, there is a huge chance that you will just get lost in some fancy idea of what spirituality is, and you will get off track. Because you don't have clarity on what you're trying to do with spirituality.

Sadhguru says it beautifully, and we have shared this in the course, that spirituality is not about growing horns. It is about becoming life. Simply life.

It is not about any special spiritual peak experience. There is no such thing as spiritual experience and ordinary experience. Because most of the people in the name of spirituality, they are trying to chase some kind of experience. They want to awaken their kundalini, or they want to open up their third eye. They want to move their chakras. They want to levitate while they are meditating. They want to levitate two feet above the ground. They want to see some light when they are meditating. They want to see Krishna dancing. They want to see different visions of angels and gods.

All this is entertainment. All this is science fiction. Spirituality is not about any of these things. Spirituality is just about answering and deepening the two questions: how do I find or experience the infinite within, and why am I longing for the infinite in the first place?

And all these things boil down to one thing. Spirituality is about knowing who you are. That is why our meditative retreat, the first meditative retreat, the name of that retreat is 'Know Thyself'. Because that is the first and the last. That is the most foundational, the most practical. It is the ultimate alpha and the omega.

Spirituality is not about the third eye activation or the kundalini or the lights and the gods and all of those things combined. It is just about being established in your truth.

The last section of the course explains this in depth so that the biggest trap of spirituality is avoided, and you don't waste yet another life chasing some mirage.

➖➖➖

The Sleeping Sadhana

Another important thing that happens at the end of the course is that we give you one simple process that you can do every night to move towards your real essence. This is called Sleeping Sadhana.

Before going to bed, Sadhguru has given this simple sadhana that before sleeping, whatever you are not, mentally everything one by one, you can keep it aside. The car, the home, the relationships, the money, the successes and the failures, the people in your life. They all are wonderful, they all are nice, some can be bad. But good or bad, they are not you. So keep it aside mentally, and sleep just as the life that you are.

That was a game changer for me. And today it has brought me such immense clarity that I cannot describe here.

➖➖➖

On Advanced Programs

The course ends with what next steps you can take, what are the other advanced programs and how you should approach it.

Advanced programs in spirituality are not about anything else apart from what we have learned in the Becoming Meditative course. They are just more sophisticated tools to dig deeper into these two questions.

So the right approach is, you should not think that if you do an advanced course, you will become more spiritual. You will become more spiritual when you apply yourself to the simplest process totally. And there is nothing simpler than the Isha Kriya meditation offered by Sadhguru, which is taught in the Becoming Meditative course in a very elaborate way.

In five hours, we condensed the entire essence of a meditative journey in that course. It's beautiful. It's all grace that I got the opportunity to do all of these things.

A Decade of Seeking, A Decade of Action

Today, on the sixth anniversary of the Becoming Meditative course, I'm just feeling so full within. I'm feeling so content and overjoyed that the seed I sowed six years back has become a huge tree and is now bearing fruits in my life and in the lives of thousands of more seekers around the globe.

Now I am fully prepared for the next phase of Yog Prachar.

It's been one decade of seeking. It all started essentially in 2016. 2016 was the time when I went off the traditional trajectory, and 2017 was the year when I actually got introduced to spirituality. And today is 2026.

It's been a decade of seeking, and I'm ready for the next decade of action.

Shambho!
